Government of Canada Supports the Goderich Celtic Roots Festival

GODERICH, Ontario, June 25, 2009 – On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, Ben Lobb, Member of Parliament (Huron–Bruce), today announced funding for the Goderich Celtic Folk Society.

This funding will support the 17th edition of the Goderich Celtic Roots Festival, which is exploring the theme “The Scattering and Its Legacy: Emigration and what follows.” The Festival, which will take place in Lions Harbour Park from August 7 to 9, 2009, will present more than 20 emerging and professional groups from across Canada and abroad and feature music from a number of Celtic traditions. Throughout the Festival, audiences will have the opportunity to participate in workshops and artists’ discussions.

“Our Government is proud to support the Celtic Folk Society,” said Minister Moore. “This festival continues to make an outstanding contribution to Goderich, by bringing the community together to enjoy a variety of music while learning about their Celtic roots at the same time.”

“The Celtic Roots Festival in Goderich is one of the premier festivals in Canada,” said Mr. Lobb. “I am proud that our Government is supporting the music and culture of the Celtic nations.”

“With the Government of Canada’s assistance, Goderich Celtic Roots Festival proudly presents ‘The Scattering and Its Legacy,’ exploring how Canadians have been affected artistically and culturally by the Highland Clearances and Potato Famine,” said Eleanor Robinson, President, Goderich Celtic Folk Society. “Featuring performers from Ireland, Scotland, Shetland, the United States, Cape Breton, Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia will weave together the threads of Celtic interconnection.”

The Government of Canada has provided $30,000 in funding through the Arts Presentation Canada Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program gives Canadians increased access to the diversity and richness of Canada’s culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences.
