Funding will create jobs, boost local economy
GODERICH, ONTARIO – Ben Lobb, Member of Parliament for Huron-Bruce, and Carol Mitchell, Member of Provincial Parliament for Huron-Bruce, today announced stimulus funding that will benefit the local economy in Huron-Bruce and improve local infrastructure for years to come. Today’s investment of $11,800,000 in joint federal and provincial funding will upgrade Highway 9 from Mildmay to Clifford and Highway 21 from Goderich to Sheppardton.
“Our governments’ priority is to stimulate the economy and create jobs. These projects will improve our road infrastructure and road safety,” said MP Lobb. “By working closely with the provincial government we can continue to improve these critical infrastructure projects and keep people working during these difficult times.”
“As a province we are working together with the federal government to get shovels in the ground and to flow funding faster for targeted infrastructure, “ said MPP Mitchell. “Today’s announcement will create additional jobs in Huron-Bruce and strengthen our provincial highway system.”
This funding will go towards resurfacing Highway 9 from Mildmay to Clifford and resurfacing of Highway 21 from Goderich to Sheppardton. These upgrades will start in time for this construction season so residents in Huron-Bruce will soon benefit from these investments.
Total eligible project costs are estimated at $11,800,000. The governments of Canada and Ontario are each providing up to $5,900,000. This announcement is part of a package of 43 highway, bridge and local road projects announced on April 7, 2010 by Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty.
The Government of Canada’s contribution for this project is being provided through the
$4-billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, a key component of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, which invests in infrastructure projects that must be completed by March 31, 2011.
The contribution from the Government of Ontario is being provided from the two-year, $32.5 billion infrastructure commitment laid out in the 2009 Ontario Budget – Confronting the Challenge: Building Our Economic Future.
To date, the governments of Canada and Ontario have announced over $11 billion in joint funding for more than 2,600 infrastructure projects across the province to stimulate the economy and create jobs.
