Goderich Celebrates Upgrades To The Lions Harbour Park
July 03, 2011

GODERICH, ON - The Town of Goderich held an official ceremony today to celebrate the completion of renovations at the Lions Harbour Park.

Ben Lobb, MP for Huron-Bruce; Carol Mitchell, MPP for Huron Bruce; and Delbert Shewfelt, Mayor of Goderich, are pleased to see this important community recreational infrastructure project reach completion.

The Lions Harbour Park underwent structural improvements to the band shell, extension of the stage, renovation of change room facilities and improved accessibility to accommodate all performers. The park also boasts a new, accessible washroom and lanes and paths were resurfaced.

The governments of Canada and Ontario have each committed up to $223,352 to the project, the Town of Goderich contributed $123,359 from reserve, and the Goderich Lions Club contributed $100,000 for a total project cost of $670,063.

“This project has given new life to a vital community space where residents and visitors alike participate in great family events such as the Celtic Roots Festival, which draws over 10,000 visitors to Goderich each year,” said MP Lobb. “Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, we are creating jobs and providing communities with modern, accessible, and multi-purpose recreation spaces that they can enjoy for many years to come.”

“The provincial government’s Open Ontario plan is designed to stimulate the economy and create new opportunities to support healthier, more active living while creating jobs,” said MPP Mitchell. “This investment is contributing to the culture of our community while supporting economic development.”

“This project is an excellent example of a partnership of three levels of Government and a Service Club working together for the betterment of the Community,” said Mayor Shewfelt.

This project is one of more than 760 across the province that is moving forward thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of more than $380 million under the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) Program in Ontario and the Ontario Recreation Program (Ontario REC). The governments of Canada and Ontario teamed up to support Ontario's communities and create jobs by improving recreational infrastructure, as these types of projects also encourage higher levels of participation in physical activity and community building.
